The House of Delegates of the American Nursing Association met in Washington June
2010 and passed a resolution to alleviate the bullying amongst nurses in professional settings. The resolution
mentioned the need to implement interventions to ameliorate the challenges that accompany the high stress levels nurses
experience. Stop Nursing Shortages Incorporated provides 'after shift' stress lowering support groups to nursing
employees. Hospitals pay a minimal fee as trained Psychological Interns facilitate groups. Hospitals provide the space or
room and a small healthful snack. The Joint Commission on Accreditation of Healthcare Organizations released information in July 2008 stating 50% of
nurses reported having been a victim of bullying or disruptive behavior at work and more than 90% stated they had witnessed
this abusive behavior of others. Our focus is on alleviating the nursing shortage by helping implement support groups within
nursing schools and in hospitals. Community College Nursing programs experience up to 25% dropout rates and hospitals face challenges
in the retention of nursing staff costing millions of dollars each year to retrain new employees. Research indicates California
ranks 46th nationally as to the worst nursing shortages. Keeping nurses in school and at the hospital is a
problem. Although the pay scale for nurses has risen, it is not enough to make nurses want to stay. Nursing is a stressful
and highly responsible job with little support. Our major contributions come from hospitals, schools
and grants.
